Like any prosperous medieval Italian city, Pisa began to invest its new wealth in the construction grand buildings. The 12th century was a good one for Pisa the city’s military, commercial, and political importance grew as their once small seaport became a regional powerhouse. The tower was built to show off (with stolen money) The Allies intended to destroy the tower during WWII.Mussolini hated the tower and made it worse.The seven bells at the top have not rung since last century.Wars and economic strife may have saved the tower.

The lean creates some interesting imbalances.The tower has leaned in multiple directions.It’s not the only leaning tower in Pisa.The tower was built to show off (with stolen money).The restaurant can now seat over 700 patrons. In 1978, they added a successful 175 seat Giggles Comedy Club. The restaurant expanded by adding a large dining room and three function rooms. Arthur Castraberti, an employee Prince Macaroni in Lowell, MA turned down an opportunity to manage the restaurant and purchased the property. In 1961 the Prince Macaroni Company owned a small 12 seat pizzeria at this Saugus location. The smaller upper column has bifurcated metal red-white-green banner. The tower has the sign PIZZA in large vertical red letters on each side of the main column. The tower is easily visible from both directions of busy US Route 1.Ī two stage column is painted with the famous circular colonnades of the Italian original. According to their website they are the largest independently owned pizzeria in America but what make this restaurant unusual is a variation the common pizza/Pisa pun - a 30' replica of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa protrudes from the roof.
